Mason considered the difficulty of holiday shopping. She read over her list again Mom Grandma Waterford Aunt Stacy and the kids Grandma and Grandpa Weston Dad Aunt Virginia and Uncle Paul Nicholas Constance Miss Semingworth Lady Lyness Apartment Doormen and assorted other household help Mom would be easy. Aunt Stacy and the kids would be easy. Aunt Virginia always wanted crystal. hmm. Constance would probably be easy too. The rest? ouch. No ideas. She picked up a scarf her mother would adore... toys for Stacy's kids were fun to buy, she had to weed a few out in the checkout lane at Toys R Us because she knew Stacy would complain if she sent too much. A bottle of nice wine for Stacy, who wouldn't indulge herself that way but loved it. Beautiful pair of crystal salt and pepper shakers for Aunt Virginia's collection. Clothes shopping for Constance... she picked out several outfits she knew would please her senses, be comfortable and show off her gorgeous body without looking like she was showing it off. What a pleasure to be able to choose clothes for someone so lovely, who seemed not to do it for herself at all. Now the hard part. Lyness had nowhere to put things - she'd have to find something that Lyness could use immediately, or wear, or keep somehow without hands all the time. Not easy. Jewelry? Maybe an ear clip for those lovely, strange ears? Mason checked out the jewelry counter at the department store. Lyness certainly didn't need perfume, or makeup. She chose a jeweled clasp as a tenative possibility, putting it into her shopping cart, and proceeded on. Miss Semingworth and Nicholas were rather a matched pair of conundrums. So rich they simply bought whatever their whims lit on. Her task was to find each of them something they'd appreciate, yet never occur to them to want. She considered carefully. Perhaps movies... if she bought them DVD's, they could easily buy themselves players if they didn't already have some. In Miss Semingworth's case, something about rediscovering one's humanity... without too much romance. She didn't want her reminded of her differences, but of her similarities. Maybe _The Shawshank Redemption_... that was supposed to be a good movie, and about someone in prison, and redemption ... Mason hadn't seen it. But it seemed like maybe a good choice. She looked over the other movies, thinking two might be better. _Dances with Wolves_... about a man's effort to fit into an alien society... that might be a good one. She bought both. Now for Nicholas. For him, something about socializing... the adequacy of being different, and happy... she thought he might already have whatever she chose, though, so she decided to check it out when she returned to their apartment, to see what movies he already had and if she could supplement with something he might have missed. She did glance through the titles for possibles though... hmm... Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a natural... Real Genius definitely.... maybe Say Anything... What about a present for Dad? He was always difficult to please. What he'd really like maybe was tickets to a pro football game... out of town plus plane tickets? That would be good. Kind of expensive, but, Mason had few expenses and a decent salary. What else was she going to spend her money on? And the grandparents. What they probably would say was they wanted her to find a nice young man and settle down. She didn't think they'd much approve her current ... her mind drifted. Her current what? What should she call it? State of confusion? Love affair? Swept away.... this wasn't helping figure out a gift for the grands. Hmm... sugar free candy was always a fall back. All of them were on low sugar diet restrictions. She popped some fancy boxes of it into her cart and continued. While she was in the fancy candy section she picked up a few treats to pop in stockings for Nick and Constance. What for the doormen and security people at the apartment building? And her hairstylist and all the other people she had to get gifts for... hmm... fancy shampoos and lotions were nice for the women. But it'd be easier to get them all the same thing. Oh, those were cute. Little decorative mini-lamps. Nice on your desk or nightstand, for work or home. She got a dozen of those, so she'd have enough. Thinking a bit more, she picked up one for Grandma Weston, too, who'd probably like it. Grandma Waterford had a very self-important interior decorator and wouldn't use such a thing for fear of offending her. Finally, her shopping done, she had a thought. She stopped off at the pet store and bought a chew toy and a pretty new personalized collar tag for Brutis. Now she was really done with her shopping, she thought, satisfied, though reminding herself she hadn't actually bought Nicholas anything yet. She had plenty of time, though.
